Summer Progress & Community Highlights

Updated: Aug 28

ree

This summer has been full of momentum at The Refuge! We’ve been overwhelmed in the best way by the number of volunteers who’ve come to help renovate the space. From painting and patching to furnishing rooms and organizing the growing pile of donations, your hands-on support is turning this building into a true home for immigrant families. Thank you!

We’re deeply grateful for everyone who’s played a part. Stay tuned for upcoming volunteer opportunities, events, and ways to stay involved. There’s still much to do and we’re just getting started.

Immigration Updates:

Here are a few recent federal updates that could impact members of our community:

TPS for Haitians to End

On June 27, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security officially announced that Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti will end on September 2, 2025. This decision affects over half a million Haitians currently living in the U.S. under TPS. The federal government claims conditions have improved, but many Haitian advocates and allies strongly disagree, citing continued instability and violence.

We know this change may deeply impact members of our community. We are committed to staying informed and supporting those affected however we can. If you or someone you know may be impacted, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Changes to Work Permit Renewals for Asylum Seekers

USCIS has streamlined the process for asylum applicants to renew their Employment Authorization Documents (EADs). Automatic extensions are now valid for up to 540 days, helping reduce gaps in work eligibility.

EOIR Rule Limits Case Transfers Without Notice

A new rule from the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) requires that noncitizens be notified before their cases are transferred to a different court. This rule seeks to increase transparency and fairness in removal proceedings.

Policy Watch: Bills to Be Aware Of

As immigration policy continues to evolve, here are a few key bills being discussed in Congress:

  • New Way Forward Act (H.R. 536) – Seeks to reduce mandatory detention and end criminal penalties for immigration violations.

  • American Families United Act (H.R. 2920) – Would allow immigration judges more discretion in cases involving U.S. citizen family members.

  • Farm Workforce Modernization Act (H.R. 4319) – Aims to provide legal status and a path to citizenship for undocumented farmworkers.

We'll continue to monitor developments and provide updates as they happen. If you have questions or need immigration support, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at The Refuge.
