🏀 Bringing the Court Back to Life

Updated: Aug 28

ree

We’re excited to announce that our existing basketball court at The Refuge is getting a full makeover, thanks to a generous donation from a local supporter!

This renovation will strengthen a space that’s already becoming a gathering place for the community. From after-school games to weekend shootarounds, this court has been a well-used resource and it’s about to be even better equipped to serve.

But we’re not stopping there.

We’re also dreaming up plans to build a mini caged soccer field right next to the court—a space where kids and neighbors from all backgrounds can come together and build community through sport.

We’re currently in the planning phase and could use your help. Whether it's donating materials, volunteering labor, or helping us spread the word, every bit makes a difference.

Immigration Update:

Here are a few key federal updates that may impact members of our community:

Stricter Vetting for Family-Based Visa Applicants

As of August 1, 2025, USCIS now requires tighter vetting and more in-person interviews for many family-based immigration cases. While aimed at preventing fraud, these changes may slow processing and add challenges for legitimate applicants.

TPS for Haitians Ending February 3, 2026

On June 27, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security announced that Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti will end on February 3, 2026. This decision affects thousands of Haitians living legally in the U.S. under TPS.

While the federal government claims conditions in Haiti have improved, many Haitian-led organizations and advocates strongly disagree, citing continued violence, political turmoil, and humanitarian crises.

Work Permit Extensions: Up to 540 Days

USCIS now allows automatic extensions of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) for asylum seekers and other eligible immigrants—up to 540 days from the expiration date. This helps prevent gaps in work eligibility due to renewal delays.

What We’re Watching: Key Immigration Bills

Several bills are currently being discussed in Congress that could impact immigrant communities if passed:

  • American Families United Act (H.R. 2920): Would allow judges more discretion in deportation cases involving U.S. citizen family members.

  • Farm Workforce Modernization Act (H.R. 4319): Would provide undocumented farmworkers with a path to legal status and eventual citizenship.

We’re tracking these and will keep you updated as things develop.
